Bath and Body Works Candle Recall Reported
  • Bath & Body Works Announces Recall
  • Controversy Arises Over Candle Packaging
  • Company Issues Apology

Bath & Body Works has issued an apology and recalled one of its candles, according to The Associated Press.

This comes after the company received criticism for the design of its packaging, which some found to resemble the hoods of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).

The candle in question, named «Snowed In,» was briefly available on the company’s website before being pulled.

The packaging design was intended to depict a paper-cut snowflake, featuring white cone-shaped edges and two holes near the center.

However, several users on social media pointed out that the design reminded them of the hoods used by the KKK.

One Instagram user commented, «I’ve never seen a snowflake that looks like that,» while another added, «This was no accident.»

In response, Bath & Body Works acted quickly by removing the candle from its stores and website.

A spokesperson for the company stated, «We apologize to anyone we may have offended, and we are working quickly to remove this item and are reviewing our process moving forward.»

The Company Faces More Than One Controversy

This is not the first time Bath & Body Works has faced criticism for the design of its products.

In 2022, the company was scrutinized for a collection launched during Black History Month, which featured packaging inspired by kente cloth, as reported by the New York Post.

Some saw this as an inappropriate cultural appropriation.

Bath & Body Works, founded in 1990 with over 1,850 stores across the U.S. and Canada, has committed to improving and preventing similar situations from happening in the future.

The Ongoing Issues for Bath & Body Works

In recent years, brands have been subjected to increasing scrutiny regarding cultural sensitivity and respect for minorities.

What might once have been considered a simple design error can now trigger significant backlash, especially in a world where social media quickly amplifies the voices of dissatisfied consumers.
